As former Philippine President Joseph “Erap” Estrada was running against Incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim, a former city police chief, once had a reputation as a tough crime fighter nicknamed “Dirty Harry” and backed by President Noynoy Aquino in his bid to keep his job against Estrada’s movie-star charm was capitalizing on his movie-star popularity, particularly among the poor masses, and urban decay in Manila, the historical heart of the Philippine capital along Manila Bay. Once a lively tourist spot, the streets of Manila have become neglected, many popular establishments moved out and residents complain of crime.
It’s a grim reality that the people of Manila had very bad options in choosing a new leader for their beloved Manila, the nation’s Capital. They had to choose between an ex-president who is a convicted plunderer, and an old ex-cop who couldn’t clean his city.
Sad to say but I think, the Manileños deserve the kind of government officials they have.
So to all Manileños, as Erap is now probably celebrating his victory in Manila Mayoralty, I bid you all good luck!
