Wake Up Call To Manila

After reading a post titled “PhilippinesManila – Awfully Disappointing” in, written by Geoffrey James Quartermaine Bastin, I should say that this is the best way to make a perfect description of what Manila is. And a better way to make a wake up call to every Filipino in this part of the world. An eye-opener to the truth about this once a proud city of the whole Asia. And you know what?! It’s been a year now after that blog was posted!

Many foreign personalities visited our country, but some of those personalities like Claire Danes, Mariah Carey and Taylor Hitsch gave negative remarks about Manila. And because of their opinion the Filipino people reacted aggressively and lashes out to those people. What a Filipino spirit.. Used in a wrong way.. Tsk.. Tsk..

But,  that’s the whole point. We as a country who many of us probably at one point lived and worked in Manila, always seem to be outraged when we hear news about these foreign personalities give an opinion about our country especially our main capital. Man! To tell you the truth, that ain’t being patriotic. What they are saying ain’t cool anymore. But that is the reality, they are just frank of what really Manila is. They just gave us a wake up call! And what we feel is just being plain insecure. Have we all been too blinded by our association to Pacquiao or Charice being Filipino that we do not know what the reality is anymore? The reality is that we have millions of things we should be embarrassed about as a country. Crying foul over the truth just validates our insecurities as a country even further.

Calling names? Declaring a person persona non grata? Demands for a public apology? Banning from SEA? Others even call those personalities who said something bad about our country as racist.. what was racist about it?? Are they all serious? If lets say some international artist gave an opinion about on what they seen here in the Philippines do we have to arrest and stone that person to death for giving a negative remark about their perception about our country?

Remember Mai Mislang, Noynoy’s aide who tweeted how the wine being served at an official function hosted by the Vietnamese govt really sucked, and continued by saying that there were no handsome men in Vietnam and how crossing the motorcycle-laden streets of Vietnam is the easiest way to die? Did you hear anything from the Vietnamese government? Did they declare Mislang as persona non grata?

We Pinoys are just way too over-reactive and over-sensitive.

And Hey! Wake up! This is not a dream, this is reality! And reality sure hurts!
